How much do driving habits really affect engine life?

I was having a discussion with a mechanic friend last week, and he said something interesting. He told me that the way you drive can affect engine life more than the brand of the car itself. That got me thinking because a lot of people here own Japan imported vehicles Pakistan, and generally we consider them reliable and long lasting. But I have seen the same models last 15 years with one owner and barely 7 years with another.

From what I have learned, a few habits really make a difference: not revving the engine when it is cold, changing oil on time, avoiding sudden acceleration and hard braking, and not driving with very low fuel all the time. Short trips also wear the engine more because it never fully warms up.

I was reading a maintenance guide on a site called Nobuko Japan about imported cars and they also mentioned that consistent driving habits matter more than people think, especially for used Japanese engines.

What do you guys think? Have you noticed a difference in engine health based on driving style?
